Photo Back Up ~ iCloud ?

Hi there
I currently have all my photos backed up on discs and to an external hard drive.
I have just moved to an iPhone & iPad and thought I could upload all my photos to be store in the iCloud, I do appreciate i might need to pay for additional storage allowance.
Not sure if I am just being dumb:embarasse but it seems the max storage time in the iClould is 30 days for photos. Am I wrong ?
If this is the case, should I wait for apple to introduce service or start to look for another service ?
