    You mean make it the default programme for opening Word docs? There's a list somewhere in Windows for which programme is default. What happens when you double click the file? You should really save the .doc out of the email anyway if you want to be editing stuff anyway.
    If you still have trouble, answer emptybox's question above, and also what version of Windows you're using, and what Email programme you're using.

    Thanks almillar, I've found out whats going on.
    Because my Windows 8 came with preloaded apps (most of which will never get used) when I double click on the attachment it always came up with " Your computer cannot open a Microsoft Office document. Would you like to have Microsoft Office?" It then told me how to buy it!!

    Once this app was deleted the problem was solved and it now opens with LibreOffice.

    Not all the apps are free, just preloaded adds masquerading as such.
