Having a bit of a dispute between myself, a company and my ISP about some issues I have with an online game. The company blame my ISP, ISP checks everything out and cannot see any issues.

The company are blaming the fact that I have a number of unknown hosts on the traceroute. Not really a networking person, so not sure what effect, if any, these would have.

Excerpt from the traceroute below:

Host Name IP Address Hop Ping Time Ping Avg % Loss Pkts r/s Ping best/worst
BThomehub.home 192.168.1.254 1 2ms 1ms 0% 53 / 53 1ms / 4ms
* Unknown Host * 2 20ms 20ms 0% 53 / 53 20ms / 22ms
* Unknown Host * 217.32.145.206 3 21ms 35ms 0% 53 / 53 20ms / 22ms
* Unknown Host * 213.120.176.18 4 21ms 20ms 0% 53 / 53 20ms / 22ms
* Unknown Host * 213.120.178.67 5 21ms 21ms 0% 53 / 53 21ms / 23ms
* Unknown Host * 217.41.168.107 6 22ms 21ms 0% 53 / 53 20ms / 27ms
acc1-10GigE-0-1-0-4.l-far.21cn-ipp.bt.net 109.159.249.70 7 21ms 21ms 0% 53 / 53 20ms / 24ms

Any ideas if that would be the issue, and if so how to resolve it?

    Unknown hosts aren't a problem in themselves, as it just means their IP address isn't resolving (not too uncommon depending on what they are, and what service is being used to try and resolve them).

    From the looks of it you're not losing any packets at those hops, and the time is good.

    P.S.
    I'd obscure the last section of the first unknown host ;)

    Thanks for that. Seems it's just part of the BT network.

    The company in question are claiming that they are the cause of my disconnects, but as you point out there's no packet loss nor lag on those.

    Oddly since posting, I've found there's thousands of others with the same issue, all around the world. Has to be the company.

    Thanks for your help!

    What's the game? Have you checked that your router is able to open and assign the relevant ports?

    UPnP supposedly does this automatically (although it's a bit of a security risk). If you've turned it off, you'll need to set up port forwarding.

    Port forwarding all set up. It's FIFA 14, so dealing with EA who are notoriously bad at resolving things it seems.

    Tried with UPnP on and off, but the same thing each time.
