Homebase- wrong paint in dulux tin (matt not satinwood)

Hi there, I need some advice as homebase sold me dulux mixed paint I asked for, even stating on the label it was in fact satinwood but after 2 days of painting it's peeled and turned out to be matt.
I have the tins with paint in (some ) to prove it but have never complained before, let alone on this large scale.
As I had the 6 chairs woven after painting them that's a huge job to pay someone to do. My kitchen cupboards are peeling now too.

Will I have to get a solicitor or are they helpful when they mess up this badly?
Any advice gladly received.

First, I'm going to ask some questions that may seem obvious to you but please keep in mind none of us know all the details you do.

Are you sure you mean satinwood and matt?

Do you mean that you had the chairs done after painting them? If so, I'm afraid you'll have next to no chance of recouping that cost.

Didnt you notice even halfway through that it wasnt satinwood? Or while applying it? Or have you never used it before? In which case, why are you sure its not satinwood?

And one last thing, did they advise you that type of paint was suitable for the surface you intended to paint?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Hi there, thanks for replying :-)

I am an amateur but I wanted the satinwood finish for my wood cupboards in kitchen & chairs, as well as a few other diy things.

I painted the wodden chairs and did think they seemed a bit rough feeling, not smooth as satinwood should be but they had to done by thursday as they were being picked up and woven. Now they look great but the paint can be scratched off.
I've taken a cloth to the cupboards and it will wash off with soap and water and a scrub. Not satinwood.
It says satinwood on the tin but it behaves as matt and it's the expensive dulux colour mixing range. I'm pretty sure the machine messed up or the guy mixing it messed up.

    Hope this helps.
  • I have other things, in fact I hate gloss so all wood is satinwood, we've compared it and this has no shine and 'rubs' off. It's definatly not a stayer :-)

Grrrr, I hate the preparation of painting. Hope it washes off but the chairs will have to all be redone (£250)

there is a lot of preparation for painting things like kitchen cupboards (and special paint for that specific job) eg washing with sugar soap first, sanding the surface before you start, primer, undercoat before the actual cupboard paint with sanding down between each of the coats. I imagine the chairs would need similar preparation

Yes exactly. I spent all of last Sunday painting sheds in my back garden. I read online and via the paint instructions heavily on how to prepare the surfaces. I'm wondering with using Dulux as I did if this is the problem?

If all the prep was done right then even matt paint wouldn't rub off the way you described, maybe your undercoat or primer are the problem.

I used matt to paint some items, it did no prep other than a quick sanding and the paint never came off the way you describe. I was going to do it properly but it was for the spare bedroom and I had some of the paint left over from the walls so just gave it a try. Matt paint may not be designed for the job and won't look as good or last as long as doing it properly but it should still last a short while if the surface was prepped and it has something to cling to.

Probably of no relevance but my OH recently decided to repaint all the white doors in the hallway. We always use Satinwood, usually an own brand but this time went for Dulux.

Doors prepared properly, my OH is very thorough, all rubbed down , washed properly etc. it ended up taking 3 coats to cover, the paint still looks like chalk, definitely not Satinwood, and it has started flaking off. According to the shop paints have had some changes due to EU safety rules and they claim they have been getting a lot of complaints. They took back all the paint we hasn't used, we used some old paint we had to make good and will start again when we have time.
