Not sure if you just wanted "technical" advice, or "family" advice as well. But if I was you, I would speak quietly to your dad, using the words I posted above. Say that you really don't want to fuss, but you had this letter from the solicitor and want to be clear about it.
It may be that you let it drop for the sake of your dad's marriage, but at least you know that they thought of you.
Do you know what was left to you? I wonder if that might make a difference?
I do also wonder if there is any point in contacting the solicitor who wrote to you. They may be willing to point you in the right direction. When we had a bit of confusion over a will of which I was an executor, the solicitor who drew it up gave us some useful advice without charging.

Thanks for this. It is an extremely useful resource.
Although not everyone's death results in probate, of course, it did inform me of the post-1996 death of a long-lost childhood friend who I suspected had died but didn't have any other address info/mutual contacts to help me find out, and not something I would have travelled a great distance to check.

Can only search one year at a time, but this is simplified by a 'next year' search link at the bottom.

My reading of opening post was that SGMs 2011 estate, about which a solicitor made contact, was all done and dusted at the time.

The current query is about SGFs 2012 estate, for which it is not known if a solicitor is involved at all or even if there was a will and probate granted. The new online resource will enable OP to double-check if probate was granted, and to obtain a copy of will.

One would expect probate or grant of administration as there was a house to sell. Unless ownership of house was transferred to someone else before SGF died, of course, and resulting estate was too small to require a grant.

You can also try searching the Gazette Online as executors often advertise for creditors there:
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/wills-and-probate

Thank you for that, I had been trying to get a copy of a will and did not have much success but this has found it no problem

You can't. It is a public document that anyone may look at if they pay the fee.

You may find that your SGF left something to his grandchildren without naming them so you will not be entitled. He may have assumed as he thought of you as his grandchildren that would be OK.

Not quite true. The original will cannot be viewed, but a certified copy can be bought.

Well, to update this thread - after occasional searches on the government will/probate site mentioned above with my S-GF's details there seems to have been no will or probate. I know the house was sold - maybe to clear debts, I have the impression from my Father that he led my S-GM a bit of a dance and may have racked up debts. I have no idea really.
