My Gumtree adverts showing as 'banner ads'

I was looking at a gardening forum and was surprised to see a Gumtree banner advert appear.

What puzzles me more ... the advert is actually showing two of the items I am selling.

How is this being done ?

There is a system of advertising & cookie use (if I remember right) where, on certain commercial sites, whatever you look at is stored by an advert company and a cookie placed on your computer by them so they can remember you.

Then, as you browse, the ad company shows you adverts of stuff you've looked at and might be interested in. As you most likely viewed your own adverts, I'm guessing the Ad banner is now showing you, from Gumtree, what it thinks are similar items you might be interested in - which just happen to be yours.

It's a rubbish system. Halfords use it a lot - so when I check to see if they've got something I want, it shows on their ad banners for weeks after.

Mind you, it can be fun if get hold of someone else's laptop / tablet. And browse the Ann Summers site for them.
