Termination of apprenticeship

My husband works for a well known company , he is on a 6month temp contract which is due to run out in April. When he signed up he was told he would be doing an apprenticeship which would last 1year.
He is 33., so I'm unsure if it is goverment backed or not.
His colleagues who are on temp contracts have been there longer than him keep getting their contracts rolled on for another 6months, they aren't doing the apprenticeship as far as I'm aware, it was relatively new last oct when my husband started.
Rumour is that the company are laying off temps ...
Does my husband have any rights? I only ask because I did an apprenticeship last year and tried to leave and was told I couldn't because I had signed a contract.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for reply, he works for nissan, no 3rd party involved. His contract is with nissan they are also who he is doing apprenticeship with.0

He would need to refer to the contract as to his employment status (apprentice or not) as apprentices do have slightly more rights. A very large employer like Nissan will do their own training normally as they will be accredited to run it themselves rather than going to a college so he will need to speak to the HR dept.0

In short, yeah apprentices can be laid off. Are you in the North East? Nissan don't usually take on apprentices aged 18+, as far as I'm aware. Has he actually been told he's being laid off, or is it just a rumour?0

Don't think it would be a trade apprenticeship as such, more along the lines of NVQ and other training courses combined and given the name of Apprenticeship.
I have recently complete my "Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business Improvement Techniques", which involved a two week course followed by workplace tasks and assessment for 12 months.0 -

If it is at Nissan then it is likely to be an apprenticeship as they run their own, in house accredited ones. As a large employer, they dont necessarily need to send the candidates to a college as they have the expertise on site to teach.0 -
I work for JLR and all the new starters (production associates, ie track workers) are put through the "Apprenticeship" run by a company called Pera Training. They also have "proper" 3/4 year accredited trade and technical Apprenticeships.0

Thanks for al replies.
He is doing an apprenticeship and will gain an nvq at the end of it. It is something which is quite new to nissan I think.
Rumours are is that all temps are being finished.0 -
Rumours or not. Worrying isn't going to get you anywhere. The amount of energy you spend worrying can be transferred to looking towards the positive.
If its meant to be then it is. Nothing you can do. Apply your energy to thinking positive and how he can use the skills gained.
Also, stop listening to rumours.0 -
If he is on an apprenticeship then he cant be a temp. Part of being on an apprenticeship is that there must be a contract of employment that is for at least the length of the expected apprenticeship. So if he is on, say a Level 2 or Intermediate Apprenticeship lasting 1 year, his contract must be for at least 1 year as well.0
