Yes it is. My mum's dog will rip a toy to shreds as she is a terrier, but she is not dangerous or aggressive in any way.0 -
You could ask the neighbours specifically what they're doing to make sure it won't happen again - eg keeping the gate closed, muzzle, dog on a leash, kept in back garden rather than front etc. That might help to reassure your mother.0
-
They said they will reinforce the gate but I can't see how that will help as the gate was open. They kept saying they are really sorry but I don't know how genuine this is.0

Was this in a public place?
If so phone the police and make a complaint under the dangerous dogs act.
With a bit of luck, the owner will get charged and the dog put down. If she doesn't how will she feel if this devil dog bites the face off a small child next time.
What a ridiculous post. Complete over reaction.
OP I do agree that the owners need to take responsibility for the action of their dog. What sort of people are they? The bling and burberry wearing type who treat pets as chattels for 'status' (innit) or a regular couple who've rehomed a dog? Do you know how long they have had it? You said it's a rescue dog - what do they know about it's past?
Not doubting your Mum, but did it definitely go for the leg and not the bag? If it's been maltreated or dumped and had to fend for itself, it may have been after the contents of the bag. (Assuming it was a carrier bag, rather than a handbag). Not that that is in any way ok and must've been frightening for Mum - particularly as she is of a nervous disposition - just playing devil (dogs) advocate.
I had a huge lassie collie rescue dog when my kids were <5. We had him before we had them. It took five years for him to trust people because he'd been beaten and starved. He had a hatred of black dogs as he'd been attacked by one. Not once did he ever get aggressive with my kids - but then we were responsible with him around them - and them around him.
There's far too much hysteria (like Poggs post) blaming the dog. People made the dog the way it is. It can change, but it has to learn boundaries and to have trust in humans.LBM July 2006. Debt free 01 Sept 12 .. :T

If it's a rescue dog it sounds as though your neighbours are trying to rehabilitate it, is it a relatively new dog?
If your neighbours rescue dogs I would give them the benefit of the doubt. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I would anonymously call the police to inform them of a dangerous dog but won't say too much about it biting your mums bag, as you wouldn't want to p the neighbour by grassing on them coz you live so close.
Some staffies are as soft as putty. The only danger is that you'll get licked to death.
Any dog sees it as its function in life to defend its home, its own territory.
The best thing with any dog is not to react negatively. My GD has a Staffie and there's all-out war between him and the postmen, mainly because the postmen have teased him, rattled the letter-box etc. Once you're in his home, though, he will lick you to death and roll all over you.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

It could have been any type of dog to do that. Do not label that as it was a staffie it must be dangerous. like others have said you are likely to be licked to death than bite by most... mine is currently asleep on my feet dreaming of chasing birds no doubt.
I hope your mum is feeling better.:beer:Member of Mortgage free in three. :beer:55. littlemonkeywolf. Reduce my mortgage0 -

You know what? I knew you would come and say something like that (I've seen your views on dogs before).
My mum rang me having a panic attack. I was passanger in car while my partner drove me to my mums. I used my phone in the car to post.
Once there I spoke to the neighbours and then rang 101. Is that enough for you or do you want the reference number as well?0 -

The said they have had it for a while but it is jumpy because of a new area (they moved in three weeks ago).0
