Help with Samsung printer

I have a Samsung CLP-310. I won't print because suddenly the red light is flashing with the colour toner lights are all on. Why all the colours should run out at once I can't imagine!
I never use the printer for colour, just mono. The cost of a set of new cartridges is prohibitive but, as the black is showing as 61% remaining plus the fact that I have a new black cartridge in waiting, I am wondering if it is possible to set the printer so that it will just print in mono and ignore the empty colour cartridges? I have tried shaking the cartridges with no success but I have managed to print out a configuration report - other than seeing the volume of toner left, I can't understand the rest of it.
Any advice would be really appreciated.

I don't think you can force the printer to use only the black cartridge. I have a CLP315-W in the same series of printers and I understand that even black mono printing uses the colour toners as well. If they are completely empty it will stop working. A mono printer might have been a better proposition! Googling for cheaper cartridges might help as Samsung's own are rather expensive. A new mono laser printer would probably be cheaper than a full set of Samsung cartridges for yours.0

Printers usually count the pages you print and then use a calculation based on average toner use to 'predict' when the cartridges are empty. They don't actually have a proper measuring device like a car fuel tank so a cartridge will give X number of pages at a certain percentage of toner coverage.
You can buy a complete set of 4 toners for £14 via eBay.

I've been using these people for ages for toner and they are superb and work without any problems. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I have to ask-why did you buy a colour laser if you only ever print in mono? A wireless Samsung mono printer is about £60.No free lunch, and no free laptop

OK, I bought colour because I thought that I would use it but, as it turns out I only ever print black so, in retrospect yes, I should have bought mono.
Mr_Toad, thanks for the link but these do not seem to be compatible with CLP-315.
It seems I shall have to buy a new printer. I need laser as inkjets were always drying up - I only use intermittently. So, I need a mono printer which has cheap refill cartridges. Any suggestions?

That's strange. I have the CLP-300N which is very similar. I generally use mine for mono only and sporadically. If I check the levels then it is showing all colour toners as nearly full.
I'd have thought it is more likely to be something silly. Check the paper tray is ok, check for jams and pull each colour toner out and push it back in and restart the printer each time. Do the toners weigh enough to be as full as you think or do they feel empty?
Worth checking the manual about the waste toner system and how that needs emptying/changing. That is likely to generate some kind of similar error or the printer is becoming faulty.
Check the printer driver options in case some rogue setting is trying to use the colour toners.
Have you ever printed a colour page from the printer ever?
If you've done about 12,000 mono pages it might be trying to tell you the waste toner tank needs emptying:

For cheap mono printers then get another samsung. The new lasers are about £50.0 -

Apologies, I misread the model number.

Apologies, I misread the model number.

But they'll fit mine and I found the same set on Amazon for under a tenner :T
Or premium compatibles for £20 for a whole set.
I have a feeling when I was looking for this printer I looked at the 310N and realised the toner price was silly money then in comparison.
The 310 seems a weird one and there are no compatibles listed
If the OP can find a 300 or 300N cheap then as a second hand buy they'd be really good too.0
