Hi folks, just switch to an EDF prepayment meter after getting a huge bill £2500 for the quarter, they said it was a catch up bill, and i was paying untill dec £175 per month. when i queried it, they said based on the readings suppiled by me my usuage was around £260! a month

i live in a two bed flat with my partner and 2 kids (11 & 8) have stoarge heaters, and oilded filled raditors(yes i know these are nasty things and munch elec, but my partner isnt well and due to her health is always cold and the flat has no insulation what so ever) the usuals appilances.

so agreed to have a prepayment meter fitted to help us budget as i was out of work after being made redundant.

so meter was fitted last friday 21. so as of this friday 28 after a whole week of usuage ive noticed that we are topping up alot figures are

27/03

total usage - 424.61
rate 1 - 321.20
rate 2(i assume this as the meter dosent show it) 103.41

28/03
total usage - 507
rate 1 404.34
rate 2 102.59

29/036
total - 559
rate 1 456.41
rate 2 102.59

im on edf e7 variable rate 1 is 19.21p per day, and rate 2 is 7.24p and standing charge is 18.9p

so since the meter was installed on the 21 i have to top up £134

electric of as this morning is show £44 it was on £53 when i went to bed, 2 storage heaters on, 2 oil filled raditors on timers 5am - 8am and 5pm -8pm. immerison tank on timer to come on at midnight till 5am for hotwater.

Is this high? i am doing something wrong? am i on e7? (tried to call EDF this morning , but on hold for 30 mins then they hang up on me.

please help

You appear to be on E7 if your have a day and a night rate, but (as the names implies) you only get seven E7 hours between midnight and 8pm-it depends on the DNO if teleswitched, and on your timeclock if meter switched. Check what the hours are, and what your meter clock is set to if the latter.
If you are running any appliances out of those 7 hours (possibly midnight to 1am or 7am to 8am) then you are burning money, as the rate is over 250% higher during the peak rate hour. Clearly you must be, as you are spanning 8 hours with only 7 available.
It makes little sense in running oil filled rads on a set up designed for E7.
PS: It's also pointless running the immersion for five hours a night-it should take little more than one hour to produce a hot tankful. Is the tank properly lagged? If so it should stay hot all day.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
