cross stitch materials

ive dont a few kits but want to do my own, can find plenty of patterns but the materials seem expensive particularly the cloth?
had a look on ebay and it was £15 for 1m sq,
threads are reasonable but is there anywhere where i can get the materials very cheap?

doubt anyone will be able to help me with the second bit but when i was in dubai i picked up a kit which wasnt exactly cross stitch it was longer stitches, and it was a gorgeous Indian design, think the make was anchor stitch kits, coats flash frame series is all that is written on the packet, ive googled them but havent seen anything else similar. any ideas anyone?

(did put cross stitch in the search but only brought up threads about the patterns not the materials)

Poundland sometimes has aida in a pack with some threads.

You could try on ebay? I have often bought a full kit for an awful design just for the material inside. You can then discard the design and save the thread, needle and aida for your own designs. Are there any local haberdashery stores you could try. We have a great one that hasn't changed since the 1940's (including the staff!) and they have all sorts of sewing things which are priced very reasonably.

Thanks ForrestG. Never thought of looking in poundland for aida. I will try that myself!

They're quite reasonable. Don't forget, although it's pricey to buy initially, you'll be able to make lots of designs for that price. Kits can start at £15 for an A4 piece of Aida.

Poundland here has cross stitch kits and is also selling aida fabric in cream. Not sure of the count or size.

I daren't go to sewandso more than twice a year, I always end up buying far too much when I've already got loads of stuff I could be stitching. :D

cross stitch is one of my hobbies. Don't buy cheap threads or cheap material.

If you wash your finished work (as you are suppose to)it could be ruined by cheap threads as they bleed.

Get a friend in the states. They can buy DMC threads cheap. Sometimes 10 for a $1:eek:

Not sure what lead you to believe that it was a cheap hobby. Per hour it might be cheap compared to going out drinking etc. But when some kits retail at £35 + and then getting it paid to be framed at approx £40 a time.

Use ebay or look on cross stitch sites they often have places to buy and swap items.

Enjoy it though as it lasts a lifetime once completed.

yikes, i thought it was bad ordering £20 things, framing blimey, dont think id ever spend that then again dont think id have the patience to do anything that needed framing for £40
first couple of things i did we 8ish pounds and ive only finished two out of 3 over a year!!
