My garden is in desperate need of a prune, but I've never done it before and was just wondering whether now is the right time for it. I have a dwarf greengage tree and a hybrid tea rose bush that are most in need of it. The greengage is in full blossom and I can see the plums starting to develop, whilst the rose is a few weeks into chucking out new growth. Is it too late for me to prune them?

The rose has never been pruned. Would pruning all of the shoots down to ground level be too drastic?

My plum tree should only be pruned in the Summer!

Not quite to ground level - look for outward facing buds about 10-15cms up the stems and cut back to just above those.

Not the best time of year to prune plums -

If the tree is very overgrown, you might need to do it over two or more years although, as it's a dwarf, you might get away with it in one year.
