Thermal cookers: have you used one?

Agreed - the rice cooks within 40 minutes in the bag so well within tolerances and its still above required heat at that point.
I am a bit of a geek and have a thermometer to hand LOL Sad I know!
And pretty much everything starts off with a good hard boil of five to ten minutes so you are safe that end.
My temperature checks BTW show that the temperature is equivalent to cooking in the "Slow cooker oven" of an Aga which is plenty hot enough and you don't read about people being poisoned by their Aga's do you??
So far the food has been pretty good - of course I am just experimenting with some favourite recipes at the moment.
My Bag opens up flat and hangs on a peg on the back of my kitchen door - when you don't have a pot inside it it takes less space than my slow cooker.

My Wonderbag is under construction as I type, DD1 is stitching and I'm stuffing and finishing. We'll tahe a picture to post when it's finished and we'll try cooking some swedish rice breakfast porridge in it when it's finished, WOOHOO!!!0

Sounds fab Mrs LW. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. I'm hoping it will help with the fuel bills, and with powercuts (when I have to cook on a camping stove) and also with the various times when the kitchen is out of action due to renovation work...0

1 x home made wonderbag ready to roll!!!0

Now that is a seriously upmarket, designer item Mrs LW. You realise you could do very nicely making those locally (either as cookers or cat baskets...
).

The lurcha was sizing it up Greenbee, we thought we might have to make it an extension to fit him, but he says it's for a gurlie!!! cos it's gotted flowers onnit!!! so I get to keep it for me, Lyn xxx.
5.30 and I've just put the first experiment into the wonderbag - I've made a swedish rice pudding with dried cherries, cinnamon and a nut of butter in it. I brought it to a simmer for 5 minutes, brought it up to a rolling boil and then straight into the cooker, we'll see what it's like when it's cooked and post a picture if it works well x.0 -
That's well posh innit!!!
BTW - greenbee is not kidding when she mentions cats. Lost mine the other day and she was happily snuggled inside (nice and cosy)
My "Lil Pinkie"
now lives "flatpacked" on a hook on the back of the kitchen door.
LEMON RICE
1 cup of rice
2 cups boiling water
Peel from one lemon (use a potato peeler)
Juice from one lemon
Boil up for 5 minutes and then 40 mins in the bag whilst I made the rest of dinner.
Was really nice - much more "lemony" than you might think.

I think I didn't get the rice and milk quite hot enough I checked the pot after 1 hour and it's still not completely cooked through so I've closed it all up again and will check at 7.30 if it's not done by then it will finish on the stovetop and we'll eat it very hot tonight. It's going to be a learning curve as to what will or won't be successful0

Have got a young Mum across with me today - her kids are running riot with my littlie and this morning we have sorted through her finances.
This afternoon she is helping me make her own Thermal Cooking Bag - so at lunchtime we made a spag bol and tucked it in for the afternoon so it will be ready for tea for all the kids.
2 adults / 1 teen and 3 Primary schoolers we used
300g mince
2 garlic cloves
1 carton of passata plus one of water
3 tablespoons red lentils
1 large finley grated carrot
1 dessertspoon mixed herbs
Made as usual and brought up to boil for ten minutes before popping in the bag for 4- 5 hours.
Will serve with a 29p packet of own brand spaghetti.

4 hours was perfect - and the sauce is lovely and thick and savoury. The meat is very tender too - not at all "bitty" like it can be if you boil it too hard.
Definitely one to make again.
My young Mum can't wait to go home with hers - her flat has an electricity key and seems to eat it like crazy so hopefully this will save her some money over the year.
