I need to buy a external hard drive just to back up photos and documents but dont know what to look for. (brand, specification?). There are so many out there but just dont know which one is the best one. I dont want to spend much nothing more than £50. Anyone can recommend one to me? Thankyou

If you search Amazon.co.uk for External hard drive you will be presented with a list of 40,408 results.
The very first one on that list is a 1TB Samsung drive for £49.99.
I have one of these and it has served me well for over a year so far.
The same thing at 500GB is £37.00.
No idea which is the best size for you.0 -
I tend to buy WD drives. In fact one of these arrived this morning:

The 1TB version is within your budget:

photo's and docs would probably fit on a couple of blank dvd's, costing pence.!!

That's an excellent option. Add a copy of SyncBackFree to keep it in sync with your primary copy.0 -

That's about 200,000+ jpgs, if so, I wouldn't worry about it, you're unlikely to ever look at them again!!

You're wrong there I'm afraid - they are mainly .NEF (27megs ea) or .PSD (up 100megs ea) - if I need .jpeg I convert them as I want them.
I do look at/use them a lot, surprisingly - that's why I kept them
