Gas Cooker 2 years old - Grill has stopped working

I bought a gas cooker 2 years ago , a couple of days ago the grill stopped working , the gas is coming thru and it ignites but it won't stay lit , as soon as I let go of the tap the gas stops .
I believe this is a safety function (the thermocouple?) we had a similar problem on the gas fire a few years ago .
anyway , we have no extended warranty but I'm aware that there's something called 'Fit for purpose' - as I understand it this essentially means that the goods must last a reasonable amount of time , have I got that right ?
I bought it from Apollo .
any advice ? Is there some law I should quote when I go in with my complaint etc. ?
Basically I'm wondering if I can get the shop to fix it .

You can ask them to fix it. They can say no.
Forget about wondering about laws and things being fit for purpose. Its cooked your food for 2 years, seems pretty fit for its purpose.
Something has gone wrong with it. As it is over 6 months, if they said 'not our problem (and its not) then you would have to get an independent report saying that the fault was inherent when you bought it. Only THEN would they have to fix it/replace it/refund you (with a depreciation amount for your use) and they would get to choose. That is the only legal route if you choose to take it.
By all means ask them, but after 2 years they might tell you to pay for the repair yourself. The manufacturer might offer you a discounted repair? Who knows until you ask.0 -
Thermocouple will cost you about £10-£15.
Get a cooker registered RGI to fit it, simple job, maybe about £50 labour.
Will cost you more to get an independent report done and all the hassle0 -
well I rang the manufacturer's (New World) told them the problem , he immediately said "it's the thermocouple" , and he quoted me what they'd charge to fix it - £167 ... gulp .0

New World aren't a quality make unfortunately.
Local gas safe or local cooker parts place are the best places to find reasonable quality spares and fitting.
Espares usually do parts at reasonable prices. One which may fit your cooker is under a tenner:

It's not a matter of difficulty. You cannot fit it, you need a gas safe person to do it.This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
