Pet insurance query

Not sure whether to post this on the "Pets" board or here but here goes!
I have pet insurance - Argos Platinum underwriiten by RSA.
The renewal came through just over a week ago and the premium had increased by approx £50 so I asked Argos to lapse the policy from the renewal date 04 April and took a policy with John Lewis as it was about £70 cheaper for comparable cover.
However a couple of days ago our dog had an issue with his paw which required xrays, an operation, antibiotics etc. There was a foreign object in the paw which the vet has removed but obviously follow up visits to the vet will be required.
The receptionist / person who deals with insurance at the vet told me that I would not be able to claim through the insurance as I had effectively cancelled the policy - I had specifically told the Argos advisor to "lapse".
I rang Argos and they said that the dog is covered up to 04 April and are sending a claim form. Do you think there will be any issues with this?
Also when I took out the new policy with JL I'm sure there was something about the pet being in good health with no existing conditions.
Do you think it would be better to stay with Argos for another year?
Do I need to inform JL about this incident for the new policy?
Sorry if this has been a bit long - any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

The problem with good quality pet insurance (where they cover the same condition for multiple years) is that it creates lock in because if you switch insurers you lose cover for that condition.
You should inform JL of the claim for the injury. They will advise that any treatment relating to this injury will be excluded as it predates the policy. Depending on how many follow ups you think it'll need and their average cost will tell you if its cheaper to stay where you are or move0 -
Thanks InsideIsurance.
We have to go on Monday to get the dressings changed so I'll try get get an idea from the vet about how much this will cost for future visits.
If I was to try to reinstate the lapsed Argos policy do you think they would increase the premium due to this ongoing claim?0 -
With Motor they would, the renewal quote is subject to any changes between the date of the invite and the actual renewal.
Whilst I know a moderate amount about pet policies/terms I havent had any operational dealings with it. I suspect its the same but one way to make sure0 -
I guess I'll find out when I ring them
Many thanks.0
