Advice on new car

Hi, I am just after a few opinions to steer me in the right direction. I want to replace our everyday car as I dont like the i shift gearbox (Honda Jazz)We have our trade in (£6.5 - £7k) plus about £7-£8k on top. I thought it would be easy to pick new to us (secondhand)car, but its not !!
I like BMW 1 series diesel hatch, Maybe Golf or even 3 series BMW. I dont want any bland cars and it needs to have reasonable depreciation.
We do about 10k a year mixture of motorway, A roads and town driving. Our spare car is a Porsche Boxter (its an old one) as a fun car so I dont need anything to powerful for everyday use.
Any suggestions appreciated .. I do most of our own maintenance and fixing.
Cheers

We had golfs and 3 series as pool cars, the golf wasn't too bad but the diesel 3 series were slow and had a crashy ride, haven't tried the 1 series but my colleague is very impressed with his 135i and the bargain lease price he got.
Enjoy the test drives.0 -
My mother has a 1 series, albeit quite an old one (55reg). Harsh ride, cramped cabin, appalling visibility. I wouldn't even consider one.0

with the mileage you do I don't think a diesel is your best choice even if you do M'way miles on and off it just speaks DPF and EGR issues.
the BMW's 1 series I cant comment on but i hear stories of poor rear visability and a rough ride. There is an owner of the 1 series cab at the school my daughters go to the roofs power top has failed twice in 18 months and has started to leak water where they haven't resealed it properly.
I don't like the look of the golf mk5 on, a scirocco on the other hand is a nice looking car.0 -
Okay, heres an updateBought a new car at weekend Landrover approved 2008 Freelander TD4 GS, 45k miles, full landrover history. Bought it from main landrover dealer as it is going to be fully checked over and serviced up to date, will also come with full 12 months landrover warranty which pays for repairs up to the value of purchase price of car, it also includes an mot cover for next mot which covers any parts and labour required for non consumable parts up to £750 (£50excess)
I got £6k for my Honda and Freelander was £12.5k which looking around isnt bad for milage, history and condition .... also got a book, free hat and tank of diesel.0 -

Ah the book and hat sealed the deal .. History of Landrover dealer issue book and a light green Landrover collection baseball cap ... I'm an easy touch

So you started looking at BMW 1 series/Golf and ended up with a Land Rover.
How random is that?
Not criticising just find that a bit odd, hope your new car is a good 'un!
Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -
Good glad you bought something reasonably different to the norm, the cars you were considering, Golf and BMW repmobiles are the definition of bland.
Was going to suggest a Forester XT, wolf in sheeps clothing.0
