Hours re tax credits

Why do you get asked how many hours you work per week?

I am contracted to work 21 hours a week, but work overtime, not a lot, but enough to put me over the next threshold that they mention in the tax credits, i.e. 24 hours a week.

Should I let them know? Just there is no definitive hours I work besides the 21 hours.

But I don't want to be claiming too much by saying I'm working less than I am.

To be able to claim working tax credits you need to be working a certain number of hours each week.

So, for example, 24 hours a week between them for a couple with children with one doing at least 16 hours.

16 hours for a single parent.

    30 hours for a single person over 25 .

As long as you meet these minimums there is no need to inform them.

Thanks for the replies. I do ring up every now and then to inform tax credits of any increase in wages. Just recently rang them up to tell them my income for 2013/14 as my boss had done payroll and so I wanted to give tax credits the finalised figure.

I am a single parent, so guess the 16 hours applies to me. Thanks again.
