Following Martins advice for Young Driver Insurance - I used the comparison site only to find myself in a total mess....
Brief scenario:-
4/2/2014 – took out insurance for a Corsa 1.2 Reg W*** SFM – 14 years old (grannies car) for my 17 year old son to learn to drive in. Cost £725 pa; £145 deposit; £66 per month
15/3/2014 – I contacted Go Girl to advise them that the car had broken down and has died and we would replace the vehicle. I was advised by the representative that I had 7 days otherwise the policy would be cancelled – this was also confirmed in an email. I was advised that it maybe cheaper to start again with a new policy as new cars are cheaper to insure. I was advised that any overpayment would be refunded. So I assumed out of the £211 paid I would receive some monies back as only insured for 40 days. At the time we did not know what would transpire about another vehicle.
26/03/2014 – 11 days after cancelling the policy so I thought – I re-entered my details for a quote on a new vehicle Cost £591 (£134 cheaper) so I re-imput my son’s and our details for the insurance – paid the £118.20 deposit and was advised £55 pa. (Great!) I then sent an email to Go Girl asking them to advise what refund I would be due.
27/03/2014 – I had a response email to contact Go Girl and I was advised.
1. The original policy was still in place and had not been cancelled as per my instructions. I was told an email should have been sent by me to cancel it??
2. I was advised that no refund was due for the original insurance so £211 was for 40 days…?
3. I was recommended to cancel the new policy which was cheaper by £134 pa. and continue with the new policy – to change the vehicle over I would be responsible for an admin fee – so now I am paying £70 per month for a car which should only be £55 per month – all because the computer says no??
I am horrified that companies can act this way; it is a total fraud and I am out of pocket and no one at the insurance company appears to understand why I am disgruntled and also they do not appear to see that I have the cost of a new car and whereby I took their advice and followed their recommendation and now an totally out of pocket – they have even increased my monthly instalment from the original £66 per month to £70 which I cannot seem to find out why??
Any advice what to do??

Just insist on cancelling the original policy.
You may not be due a refund, and there may even be admin fees payable, but they will cancel it.
Then continue with the new policy as though the old one never happened.
It will most likely be cheaper in the long run, and if not, probably a similar price to do this.0 -
If you look it will cost me more in the long run as I have paid the £211 on the first policy and then £118.20 deposit on the 2nd policy so I am totally out of pocket.
Can insurance companies do this?0
