EDF meter problems.
Options
Hi I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on where I stand with EDF. In Feb 2012 a guy came to my house to change our electricity meter, it was the first I'd heard so called EDF to make sure this was all legit, they ok'd it and that was that. My meter was read in June last year so all seemed fine, however I received a bill yesterday and all readings etc are listed as estimates, so I called EDF who are totally confused as my meter doesn't match their records, they still have the old meter listed (different serial numbers/completely different meters). Now they have no idea where I am with electricity and neither do I, I'm terrified they'll hit me with a whacking big bill, surely they should've been far more on top of all this then they are?! Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did you receive a huge bill as a result?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

Do you take monthly meter readings .0

In all honesty, I haven't done it monthly, every couple of months. And all had been accepted online, until this month when they were not compatible with previous readings.0

Sounds like they haven't updated the meter s/n and readings when they changed the meter. All too common unfortunately. I hope you took your own reading before the meter was changed? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I will have to have a dig through my papers, I'm pretty sure I will have one close to the time they changed my meter. I'm so annoyed I didn't think to take a reading when the guy came, but I only came across him as I was on my way out to work, and once EDF had ok'd him I thought no more of it.
Thanks for your replies.0 -
When we had our meter changed, the guy stuck a note on the wall inside the meter cupboard showing the date of change and previous readings.0

Me too, he also asked me if I wanted to see the reading, if you have at least a reading that was within a month or so of the last reading, tell them and ask them to sort it. Apparently, meters have to be changed every so many years by legislation. Not sure why though.0 -
Both times I had my meters changed (once from paygo to credit and then from E7 to single rate) the guy who did it gave me a card which had the old meter serial no and reading and the new meter serial number & reading and I signed a note to agree the readings with him. Both the cards are still tucked behind the meter, 4 years later - just in case of any problems.
My wife thinks I'm a hoarder but saving all the bills & cards from suppliers etc has saved me endless aggro as I've always got written proof of when, what, how and why stuff got changed - it's also helped with warranties etc as I always keep receipts as well.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Yes that is what happened to me and you have reminded me I remember signing to say I agreed. This needs taking up with EDF although it may not have been their meter, it could be one that was from another company and he has changed.0 -
Wouldn't the new meter start from zero anyway, so you'd know what you've used since it was installed - or am I being a bit dum? You could just then agree that you pay what the balance is from when the new meter was installed.0

I think the problem has been that it has been a series of estimated readings from before the new meter. Yes your suggestion will work even if it means that he is paying more for electricity until the new meter, which will be zeroed so there is no problem with that.0
