When I asked my local Halifax branch if I can use my debit Visa card in Canada without charge for making transactions I was told I wouldn't be charged. I am not 100% convinced. Can anyone else confirm this?

I wouldn't be too convinced either, I would imagine Halifax would have to pay fees etc to whoever you make payment to or draw money from.. We have to pay to use other UK banks machines i.e £1.50 for cash withdrawals, so I can't imagine they won't charge you.
The only other thing would be to do, if you have time before you travel, is to ring or pop in to Halifax and ask them for a copy of Terms and conditions for your particular account. I have a copy here, but its for the High interest current account and the T&C's may be different.
Good luck, heres hoping you don't have to!!!!You have to know what the problem is before you can solve it

The only banks that do not charge at least 2.7% ish is nationwide. Some charge even more. Like Halifax! Every transaction will cost you a £1.50 fee and a further 2.75% of the amount.
I would complain about being misinformed and (if possible in the time) open a nationwide account. You don't have to transfer your main account, just pay into the nationwide all your holiday money before you go.
Or alternatively, get a nationwide credit card, or post office credit card. These do not charge fees for purchases abroad, although they will charge for taking out cash.
From halifax website:
Charges for using your card abroad
If you use your card abroad, the amount of the transaction will be changed to pounds sterling on the date we take it out of your account. This may not be the same date that the transaction is carried out. We'll choose the exchange rate that applies and we'll include a conversion fee of 2.75% of the amount of the transaction. We will also deduct a service charge of £1.50 from your account immediately for each transaction.0 -
I just tried to pay upfront for the transaction I wanted to make in Canada on my debit card online and it failed. Why would this be?0

Sorry, I am a bit confused. Are you travelling to Canada to make this purchase or trying to order something from a Canadian website here in the UK? If it is the latter, perhaps they don't ship overseas? Either way you will be charged £1.50 plus 2.75% of the transaction which will be incorporated into the exchange rate used.0 -
