A friend has been offered this by her union - it is intended to be the first call you make after an accident instead of to your insurer, and this company then handles the whole process.
Given that the "cover" is free, what is the business model and what are the advantages, if any, to the user of the service. Are there disadvantages (and does this push prices up for everyone)

They receive circa £300 commission for passing on the "like for like as new replacement car" which is actually a credit hire car. Their profit would be even more if they actually provide the CH rather than pass it on.
Even bigger profits if there are claims for personal injury.
Typically Commission of between 5% and 10% of the before vat price of repairs.0
