My insurance issue

OK this is controversial
My partner committed a crime, before I met him but it will not be unspent ( I won't go into details but no person was physically harmed)
He was released from prison 10 years ago
I was made aware that I had to let my insurers aware of his conviction, if not my own insurance would be invalid.
I was totally unprepared for the problems I would face.
I have never had any insurance claims. But suddenly my house insurers of 20 years refused to insure me.
I have had to go through specialist insurers and have little chance of ever reducing my payments( I even have to inform my health and car insurers) so I pay maximum insurance for everything
My question is why if I have never done anything wrong and my partner has live an unblemished life for 10 years do we not have the same rights as everyone else to try to reduce our insurance payments

Must have been serious, most offences are deemed spent after this time and not declarable.
Take it he is on life licence ?Be happy...;)0 -
No he is not on life licence the offence was before those " rules" ( sorry not sure of the correct phrase)0

My issue is I have never ever claimed for anything on any insurance ever and my partner has lived an unblemished life for 10 years but we will never be able to reduce our insurance payments because we have become exempt from competitive insurance markets :j:j0

...but you are now associated with someone who has a verified 'dodgy history ' and they may do so. Their choice and prices. You have to suck it up I'm afraid.0 -
I think your reply is harsh . After how many years do we have to deal with this 15/20/30 ?
None of my partners crimes were insurance related. Yes my partner did something wrong but we will never be able to reduce our insurance payments because whenever we try the convictions get in our way0 -
Will the new rehabilitation of offenders act make a difference?0

How long was the sentence?
If it was more than 4 years then you will always have to disclose it, if it was less then you don't need to disclose (based on him being out for 10+ years)0 -
Likely to be drugs thenDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

The Rehabilitation of Offenders dictates the rules of how many years you will have to pay for your crime. Assuming it was more than 4 years in prison then "the people" as represented by parliament have decided that you must always declare your offences as they were of sufficient severity to always warrant warning others.

As others have said, the rules change slightly and the new periods are as above.
There are a number of charities for ex-convicts who have articles on those brokers and insurers that are more friendly towards those with a record they must disclose eg:

There are insurers who specialise in this type of situation eg
