Child benefit didn't tell tax credits

Back in August I filled a form online to child benefit to say one of my children will be stopping her full time education and starting a full time uni course . This ment I would not get any child benefit for her from then on .
My CB payments for her were stopped .
That was fine but when I filled out the form there was a bit asking me ( have you told tax credits about this change )
I ticked no
It said if ticked no they will arrange to contact tax credits and update details .
So I thought oh that's good I wouldn't have to phone them up too .

Stupidly I forgot about this till now and wanted to double check tax credits were told by child benefit . I phoned up Friday and they didn't know the changes but it was registered I told child benefit .

I have defiantly been overpaid for 7 months not sure how much but I'm thinking £1000 or more .

I still had the same payment on Tuesday ( I did think they would totally stop ) as we are nearly at the end of the tax year and they are only adding to the overpayment.

My worry is that will they take back the overpayment all in one go , will I have a huge bill when it's not really my fault as I did tell them

Any help would be good

Sorry but how did it take you 7 months to realise the payments hadn't changed ?

If you are still entitled to TC next year they will reduce the amount until the overpayment is cleared.

Ring them tomorrow and explain the situation. You will be able to arrange a repayment plan, which may be deducted from any continuing entitlement. It is far better for you to contact them than to wait for them to contact you.
  • Tbh when the tax credit didn't change I thought oh maybe she is still intitled , I thought the CB told them and was all up to date .

The tax credit people said I will just have to wait for the letter as they can't tell me what I was ment to get

Is that really relevant, or helpful to the OP?
  • Well I've had a letter from tax credits saying I was overpaid by £2500 , but just waiting on another one as they had put down we earned £6000 more than we did so will be a little less than the above .
Just hope they will take it back over 2 years instead of one as my payment have gone down to £8 per week instead of £128 :(
