laptop overheating

Hi,

I've got a relatively old macbook that is overheating after less than 30 mins - the fan kicks in, it gets hot.....

I realise it's on the way out, but is there anything I can do to prolong the life of it? I've got some coursework to do over the next couple of weeks and can't afford a new laptop just yet!

Thanks in advance

xLV

It probably has accumulated a lot of dust and fluff on the inside. The only effective way to check and clean it is for it to be disassembled so it can be done properly. It's not a complicated laptop to take apart but the connections inside are very flimsy and easily broken by heavy handedness.

There are disassembly guides on the internet eg at https://www.ifixit.com but unless you want to do it yourself the best bet will be to get quotes from a couple of local independent repair shops. Trust me when I say that sticking the end of a hoover against the vents or trying to blow compressed air through it will not solve the problem.

You could maybe get one of the coolers/fans for it to sit on, this may keep it cool longer. Available in poundland.

Or get one of these cooler fans (that we use about once a year!!!) when the weather gets to hot for us, aim it at your laptop may keep it cool longer.

Sorry can't come up with anything better, my laptop also overheats, and just switches itself off when it gets far too hot.

ps; I have undone the bottom of it thinking it would be fluff and dust, but could not believe how clean and free of dust and fluff it was when I opened it, so wasn't the dust/fluff.
Looking forward to the day I have nothing left to list on eBay
