Left a property without paying 6 month energy bill

Options
Hi,

I have recently moved out the property I was renting. When I moved into the property 7 months ago, I took metre readings and called NPower to set up an account with them. I was told that their computers were down but that I would be sent a letter within 12 days, at which point I would have to call again and hand over the old metre readings and current ones.

The letter never arrived, so after 3 weeks I called back, only to be put on hold for an hour, then told there was no record of my previous call and I needed to wait again for a letter.

I waited another month, but still had no letter. I called them and went through the same process for the 3rd time. This time I was told that I was on a standard tariff but that because I was living alone I should consider switching to the economy tariff (or words to that effect). I couldn't do this until I had received the letter with my account number on it.

Unsurprisingly the letter never arrived.

My landlord then said she would deal with it and I never heard anything more about it until I came to move out. She said that she would be sending the final metre readings to Npower and that they would send a bill, which she would forward to me and I could choose what to do next.

I've now been moved out a month and have still heard nothing from Npower nor my landlord.

What should I do?

I don't want this to affect my credit rating, but I don't want to have to beg to pay a bill that is no doubt going to be for a ridiculous amount of money.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Why would it be a ridiculous amount of money? You have the readings so you know what it will be. Either give the money to the landlord and ask them to pay the bill when it comes through or wait for the landlord or npower to contact you when it does.

I suggest you don't give the money to the landlord. Just save it until you get a bill. As said you know what the reading was when you moved in and you should know what it was when you moved out - that will enable you to work out how much you've used and how much it cost. Write a letter to the supplier with the two readings in it and explain that you've tried to contact them and send it RECORDED DELIVERY so you've got proof that it was sent. Then sit back and wait for the bill.
It's much better to sort things out yourself rather than waiting or hoping that your landlord will. The more people in the chain the harder it is to control

  • Ah, I didn't realise it wouldn't matter what tariff I was placed on if I had readings. Thanks.

I assumed something would happen once the new tenant moved in and set up an account - but as it's been a month it's looking doubtful. My landlord has a forwarding address for me as well as my phone number and email, but I guess they still haven't sent anything out.

Seems odd as they are usually on the ball when you owe them money.

I have utilities money in a separate account so I will have no problems paying it, but I just would rather not have to chase them really.
