my engagement and wedding rings were originally white gold and hence rhodium plated. cutting a long story short, after having them re-plated (the place that made them did it free every year) i had to go to casualty to have them cut off.

white gold has nickel added to it - and I am highly allergic to nickel!!!

had the rings re-made in platinum (no rhodium and as someone else said, a pure metal) and have been fine ever since.

i can't see why someone would rhodium plate a platinum ring though.

White Gold is basically yellow gold mixed with silver and palladium and then dipped in rodium to give it a white apperance, it is not a pure metal, after a period of time, it varies amongst people, some 6 months, some 5 years!! it will start to tarnish and look a bronze colour, this is when you would get it re-rodium plated,

I've done really well then as in 39 years my white gold wedding ring has never discoloured or tarnished or looked a bronze colour. Just goes dull. Only professionally cleaned twice in all those years. Maybe they don't make them now like they used to :D

Maybe you are right Tom's Mum! My engagement ring is 13 years old, and my wedding ring nearly 11. I got them both replated for the first time last year when I got an eternity ring, as they looked dull compared to the new one, but none of them have discoloured or tarnished.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
