Long Lost PPI

Options
Hello Folks, I had a mortgage with Barclays 18 years ago. I paid a PPI of £60 a month (quite a bit in those days) for a year until I realised it was not compulsory and I was being ripped off, so I stopped it. The documentation got lost when I divorced, so I have no records. I wrote to Barclays for compensation who say they have a record that the mortgage existed, but have no statements or other details either.
Is there some wise person out there who can tell me if this is worth pursuing or shall I forget about the idea? I want to lay this to rest one way or another. Cheers

MPPI has most complaints rejected. You would need to demonstrate you were mis-sold (you dont actually give any reasons so its hard for us to comment on whether you should complain or not).

As MPPI is standalone, it wont be included in any mortgage documentation. So, even if you had it, you are unlikely to find it. Plus, you are divorced. So you will also need your ex to complain with you.

So, what are your complaint reasons? What evidence can you supply?

  • Thanks for the reply dunstonh. Unfortunately my ex passed away 4 years ago. At the time my wife or I could easily have serviced the mortgage if the other could not, so we didn't need it. Unfortunately my ex passed away 4 years ago. From your advice it looks like I would have a lot of work to do to get anywhere. I think you have given me closure on this. I'll throw it in the litterbin of life and move on. Thanks

That may work with loans and credit cards but the FOS have been rejecting complaints on that reason with MPPI unless you can show you had a couple of years with of income stacked up.

Which would immediately beg the question "why didn't you borrow less then?"

How many people immediately having bought a house usually have at least 2 years income still in the bank? (downsizers excluded)

I think the usual advice is to have about 3-6 months income in the bank, but as house buying and moving is so expensive, I doubt many even have that immediately after buying a house.

I think I read recently that lots of people don't even have 1 months income in the bank to fall back on in case of emergency, recent house buyer or not.
  • Not sure how this works but does anyone know if you can claim current account package charges under previn if they have turned you down for ppi and also ombudsman has
  • Current account charges aren't connected to PPI or Plevin.

Charges on a current account are not an unfair relationship under the consumer credit act. And for reference, you cannot claim plevin on your shopping as Asda or your mobile phone contract or your sky tv bill ;)
