Unexpected Surprise

Just called Barclaycard to close my Platinum VISA credit card account (as my 0% balance transfer deal has just ended and I've cleared the balance via using Nationwide 0% 26mth 0.75% fee card).

As part of the farewell discussion with the rep (i.e. please don't leave us etc) he asked if there is anything he could do for me: I answered yes if you could give me free money that would be great.

Ending up giving me £20 deposit into my bank account as a parting gift!

Anyone else received similar leaving presents?

I got £30 - but that was to leave my account open as opposed to close it. I bought something for £40, used that card, paid the £10 difference then closed it anyway :)

Exactly - we had a £40 meal for £10, then closed the account anyway. If they're happy to give it out with literally no strings, who are we to argue :)

£20 up is still a nice treat :)

Some things work out perfectly! :-) Good luck with the rest and finally getting it closed, although something tells me that is the last thing you want right now!

Probably not as good as free money, but when I tried to cancel my Barclaycard today as I've already recieved the £15 cashback, I managed to get a fee free 0% 18 month BT offer as I had a few hundered outstanding on a tesco 0% card with a couple of months left on it (which was a fee free 0% BT offer last year BT'ed from another 0% card)

It's mad to think purchases made in June 2012 still hasn't been paid and won't get paid for nor charged interest until October 2015 at the earliest now, I love this tarting game!

I had that with Barclaycard 2 years ago; shifted £12k of work expenses, left it 12 months (the 0% period), paid it off in full, closed the card as another offer wasn't forthcoming.

If you get it right, it works really well.

I called to close my platinum back in January. I knew they would put me through to retentions so played along with them....

Ended up transferring from platinum to Freedom after getting 12months 0% on purchases and £50 worth of points to spend on the high street which are just as good as cash. Kept my same £21K limit and am now slow stoozing those purchases :D
