Permanently damp patch on kitchen unit - salt leaked from softener

A faulty water softener overflowed in a kitchen unit. It's been removed but the chipboard has a patch which is permanently damp. Presumably the salt from the leak has soaked in and is constantly attracting moisture from the air. It looks as if it will never dry.
Is there any way of getting the salt out or sealing it in? Or is the chipboard doomed and needing replacement?

To late now but i've got a couple of small plastic containers, like jugs, at the side of my kitchen sink and i always put the wahing up liquid bottle to stand in there, in case there are any drips.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
