Remove asbestos concrete flue?

Hi All
Our place used to have warm air heating , now it has a combi boiler ,the old system obviously included a concrete flue , which runs through the loft and to the ridge , I know they are OK unless disturbed , but the bubble wrap the previous owner wrapped it in is coming away (why do people use bubble wrapby the way?!) and plus that , it pokes up right through the middle of the loft, so it might be handy for it not to be there at all , I have been quoted £180 for removal by an appropriately qualified and local company
Would you get rid , at that price , or continue wrapping it in bubblewrap ?
If I was to have it removed , the only asbestos left in my house(other than a few artex coated ceilings) would be the AIB board which is within the spine of the house (3 bed end of terrace) which I can’t really get to in any way so happy to leave that there (its above where the old warm air boiler was sited and beyond current internal walls)
Any thoughts?
Cheers

......removal by an appropriately qualified and local company....
If they are that, this is a very good price. Yes, I'd get it done like a shot. Left alone it is fine, but this is old, and the bubble wrap may temporarily hide a multitude of ills. You'd sleep better if it were done, and you'll get better use of loft space. It serves no useful purpose, may become a more costly problem in the future, and may put a future buyer off.
However, it does seem like a cheap price.... :think:0 -
Hi DD
I have used them before , when our kitchen ceiling needed replacing folowing a leak (paid for by insurance)
qualifications :
UKATA Certified Asbestos Manager Training
IOSH Health & Safety
BOHS P402
SSSTS Health & Safety Training
London Underground Health & Safety Trained
Enhanced CRB Clearance
Security cleared to work in Category A, high security prisons
I like the guy as well , so have booked him in , as you say , leaving in situ is fine but at some point , it will have to be done , so best get it out the way ,he thinks a couple of hours work , i know its something a lot of people would do themselves , probably quicker if no care was takenNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Things like asbestos aren't as frightening as they are often made out to be. However, I'm hypochondriac enough that, if I got a cough three weeks later I'd regret not having used someone else to take the risk.
If someone has the training, and is a good worker, they are more likely to manage a clean job than I would.
Much as I like DIY moneysaving, there are jobs (rodding a long-blocked sewer on moving in to a new property, for example) that I'll willingly pay for someone else to do.
Anyway, this chap is cleared to work in prisons with high-risk inmates, so he'll fit right in with managing you.
Splash the cash, and get it done would be my guesstimate.0 -
i'd get it done, some companies won't do any work on a house if their is asbestos prescent"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0

the concrete flues do , in the majority , have a tiny % of asbestos within , and it`s in the loft ,but i tend to agree , just get it done and out the wayNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0
