If you were ever going to upgrade, get the latest version.
The new format may be a reason to upgrade, although I am certain older versions of Word can read docx files.

There are certainly some Office 2003 shortcuts for which I can't find any way of doing via Office 2007 menus except for remembering the old Office 2003 shortcut. One that springs to mind is Data | Filter | Show All (ie leave the filter dropdowns in place in the top row, but show all records)

... but you can get a converter from Microsoft which means you can read and write them with 2003, maybe earlier.

It mainly works, although it can't quite do everything - for instance embedding an Office 2007 file within another Office 2007 file (eg. a Spreadsheet within a Word document) is more than it can cope with.

The point was that the OP already has a version of office that handles the ...x formats so it's irrelevant to the issue of upgrading to a later version.

    Oh of course!
Ha ha, I was on 2003 for years, 2007 for a while but had a free upgrade to 2010 which is what I use now.

The ones that are not based on menus still work. Eg Ctrl X C V Z Y all work fine.

As Jivesinger suggested, the problem is where you use the <Alt> + a letter option to quickly navigate to a menu option. Some still work, others don't.

So in Excel, the Data options still work - for example Alt D F F will still turn on Data Filter Autofilter, Alt D F S will still show all. But the Tools Options no longer work. For example, in earlier versions, you could hide Row and Column Headers with Alt T O E.

Some of the File menu options are also no longer available. Eg Alt F U for page setup.

  • Can you get office via your workplace as I managed to get Office 2013 for £7.95! Dont like it that much - more i think cause im used to the nice fancy GUI of Office 07 but it sure beats using Open Office or other open source office suites

I just upgraded from a 2010 trial/starter version (that didn't have powerpoint/publisher) to the full 2013 version today - and yes, I did go with the 1 year £80 license, as it gave me 5 users, and they're needed in my household (and there's 30% cashback at Quidco for the next few days).

The process itself is very easy - just go to the Microsoft site, log in or create an account (I used the login I set up to control the kids xbox profiles - same thing), pay and download. I've not done lots with the software yet, but apart from some visual differences, it doesn't seem too different than 2010 (though the previous leap from 2003 to 2010 was a bit more dramatic).
