Paid deposit.....

Not sure if this is correct place but thought it as good as any!

A week ago today we paid a deposit for a lovely little puppy (springer/cocker x)

I've text the breeder Monday and Tuesday and also emailed last night, about going back up to visit, dropping of a blanket (at his recommendation!) and finding out puppy food ect.

But I've heard nothing in reply? How long would you leave it before you were ringing?

When we went up, it seemed all genuine, puppies well looked after, seen mum and dad ect. And the breader asked us as many questions as we asked him!

TIA

Joanne

  • How old are the puppies? Maybe he will get in touch once they are old enough to be given to their new homes.

I'd phone the breeder and ask for an update on your puppy.

Well I relented and rung, mobile number just goes dead, and have left a message on landline.

The puppies were ready to collect next weekend.

Something just doesn't feel right at the moment!

    Thanks

Did you see the animals at the breeder's home? If so, a visit would be in order.

A breeder who breeds crossbreds? I dread to ask how much you paid for what is basically a mongrel. Sounds like you've been conned..

Agree with above, I would be very wary buying a crossbreed.

Have you tried calling from another number as if you're someone new interested in buying a pup - one way to find out if they're dodgy!

How far away are they? Could you pop by for a visit?
  • You paid a deposit for a mongerel?? Sounds like you've been conned imo. A 'breeder' where both mum & dad can be seen? sounds like he's jumped on the bandwagon selling mongerels as fashionable cross breeds for easy cash.

Did he give you a receipt? I guess it depends on what you want, do you still want the puppy, or your money back? If you want the latter, send one more email asking for a refund, then if no response send a recorded letter asking for it. You can pursue through the small claims court, but in all honesty I would put this down to experience and look to find a puppy from a reputable breeder, not someone is looking to add to the 1000's of unwanted dogs already out there

Any DECENT breeder (i.e breeding for the welfare, gene pool & future generations of the breed) would not be breeding cross breeds, and if accidental occurred, the majority of breeders would be offering any puppies free, or for a nominal amount to cover any costs. That is, IF they hadn't been responsible and ended the !!!!!es pregnancy to prevent trying to find homes in an already difficult time for many people
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money
Couldn't do it without coming here every day ;)

It certainly sounds as if this litter of pups is someone trying to make a fast buck out of the two dogs they already own. I would doubt that any health checks have been done, and nor will the first vaccination which many breeders now do as a matter of course.

OP, I do feel for you, if you thought you were doing the right thing, and to have someone steal your money with no pup there. However.... you may have had a lucky escape. Your pup may have had congenital disease that health checks would have shown up, etc etc, and these boards are littered with sad stories of people who have bought from breeders such as these and been left with huge vet bills afterwards.

If you are paying anything more than £50 in total for this pup I would walk away now as you are being conned - you could invest in a cute rescue pup for similar amounts, often with the neutering and vaccinations included.

Springer cocker crosses while not a pedigree are not a "designer breed". They're (albeit should be responsibly) bred as they carry the characteristics of both dogs to make more all round multi purpose working gundog.

If I were the owner I'd be taking a drive over to see what is going on.
