Broadband and Phone

I'm in a bit of a pickle.

I'm moving house at the minute (it's that time of year again . . . ) and now have to sort out phone and broadband.

The area I'm moving to doesn't support Virgin Media (cable), and the 3 for £30 was the package I really wanted.

Because I'm not able to get the cable services (but still need broadband) is my only option to get a BT line and to pay extra for broadband?

My only other stipulations are it must be unlimited broadband (speed isn't so important, as long as it's over 1.5mb).

I've spoken to Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk reps, but they don't seem to be too student-friendly. Does anyone know of a provider that is, and what's the cheapest package you've been able to get?

Also, on a side-note, the previous tenants had Sky, and the dish is still up there. Anyone know if I can just connect a box from Maplin etc. to get the DVB freeview channels?

Thanks,

Thom

  • TalkTalk do free broadband with their Talk2 International call plan, working out at £16.39 a month (exclusive of phone calls) with a one off fee of £29.99.

    See: http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.TALKTALK.STATIC.TESTHUB

But it does have a 40GB/month limit.

Other than that, get Virgin's package M - at 2MB/s and unlimited downloads, it's at £10 a month for the first 12 (but only signing up online and until 31.07)

Then watch TV on the net... or get a Freeview card for your computer, depending on whether its a laptop or a desktop/tower you can pay as little as £15 for one off a site like ebuyer.com

If you have flatmates, get a wireless router off Amazon (for £47 inc. del) and split the connection/share the costs. Works out a helluva lot cheaper.

Other than that (this is the package I've got), no ideas really.
