Can anyone recommend software to keep out the evils of the internet?
I have never used anything, but I now need something as my 6 year old is on google quite often.
Thanks,
Nick

you can change the way google displays results in Google preferences.
Filter images and language so they dont appear in the results and save the preferences.
I believe Ask Jeeves has this facility too.

I am sure that someone will reply later with better suggestions but in the meantime....
For Google.com / .co.uk, itself: next to the search box is the "preferences" link , there you can add a language filter and turn on the google safe search filter.

There are several parental control programs available such as Net Nanny and Cyber Patrol, but there is a free alternative which I have used in the past called WE-Blocker:

    http://weblocker.fameleads.com/

The other thing to consider is general PC security. There are so many instances of browser hijack where a user is redirected (maybe to a !!!!!! site or whatever) by a rogue program which has been downloaded on to a system, that these need to be guarded against also.

Keep your PC security running and up to date and you should be safe. I run the following:

    AVG Anti-virus program
    Sygate Firewall
    Spyware Blaster
    SpyBot Search And Destroy
    Ad-Aware
    Cookiewall
    BHO Demon
    HijackThis.

I would instal and run something similar before installing any parental control program to be sure that there are no lurking nasties to alter and get round the controls you set up.
  • The Home Office have a site for parents offering advice:

    http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.htm

It does also have a section for children, but I think it's aimed at those a little older.

Other advice would be that some ISPs, such as AOL, actually offer parental controls built in. I wouldn't usually recommend AOL, but I know a few parents who have found this really useful.

My kids use this search engine, http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/
I check the web pages they visit regularly and it's never let any nasties in.

You should strongly consider creating a limited user account for your child and password protecting ALL administrator accounts on the PC.

This will ensure that he/she cannot:
    • install any software
    • remove any installed software
    • change the computer configuration
    • get access to your "my documents" and edit or delete them
    • edit or delete the program files and windows directories
    To do this go to <Start> <Control Panel> <User Accounts>

Which particular evils are you thinking about? Virus, trojan etc .... or content e.g "adult" sites

i know everyone slates AOL - the only reason i use it because it allows me to pre set times of day for my daughter to access int. and also sites. it then sends me an email containing all the sites she hit and how many times, you just click on the link in the email and it takes you directly to the page they virewed.

It also tells you how many emails or MSN messages etc they sent or received and the addresses of such messages... i find it invaluable ...
