New laptop rubbish, microsoft office won't install can I return both?

I ordered a Toshiba Satellite laptop out of my catalogue for my business from home. Its very similar to my personal laptop but for some reason, even though it has more memory etc its running extremely slow webpages take ages to load, you tube videos freeze and if I am not in the same room as my broadband router it won't pick up wifi. I haven't had this problem with my personal laptop in fact my other laptop is completely battered but still does its job.
I purchased Microsoft Office from PC World and tried to install it (before I realised how slow the laptop is) and it won't install.
What worries me is that the Microsoft Office key is for 1 computer only and so if I have used the activation key on this laptop and I return the laptop I won't be able to use the key on a new laptop? It cost me £110 for the activation key.
Any advice?

I bought a Toshiba a couple of months ago and had the similar problem.
I have fixed it now and it runs faster than the desktop I am using now. It may need all the windows updates , updating. There were literally about 70 updates to do on mine. It also needed some extra software updates doing before I could run things like You tube. Don't use the Mc caffee updating window to update, it takes ages, as W8 tries to do it at the same time. Wipe off Mcaffee and use avast instaed.
If it is windows 8 OS, it doesn't make it known you need to do them, go onto the desktop page and hover over the little triangle on the bottom RH side of the screen.
Now updated, it is a really lovely machine to use, once you get used to W8.0 -

Run this fixit: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2822317
which will fully uninstall any preloaded image of Office (which, on Toshibas, tends to cause problems). Then log into your office account to download, and you shouldn't have any problemsSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Windows 8 has built-in antivirus and anti-spyware, called Windows Defender (used tobe called Security Essentials). Remove any other antivirus.0

In answer to your question about your rights to return the laptop -- yes, quite possibly. If it is indeed faulty, you can return it.
If you've had it for less than 7 business days and you've purchased it from a remote location then you also have DSRs to fall back on.
As for the software from pc world, no. You've used the key. The product is not faulty, and even if you return the key, you still have the license. It's the equivalent to keeping a perfectly working TV and returning its box.
On to more techie stuff:
If you're suffering from wifi issues, windows 8 is pretty notorious for its wifi drivers not getting on with manufacturer wifi drivers. Uninstall any manufacturer specific network adapter software from device manager and reboot. windows will take control and your wifi reliability may shoot through the roof.
That being said, I had a tosh ultrabook (windows 7) with the world's crappest wifi card in it.... tosh have fallen through the floor in terms of quality the past few years.
As others have said, though, install all the updates as they may address your issues.
Incidentally, you said that your old machine ran better. What are the specs and the operating system? How old is it? Don't forget that what was needed to run, say, winxp is not necessarily good enough to run newer software so well. A pentium may have been GREAT for windows xp, but it's pretty average when shunting around windows 8 and modern browsers, for instance.
Lastly, if you need to swap machines and office won't install because it's registered to THIS machine, call the activation line, give them all the info, and marvel as they swap your key over to your new machine. It's very common and MS doesn't care as long as you let them know.0 -

Maybe not. It appears the purchase was for a business from a business catalogue, so B2B laws apply, not consumer law.
Therefore, whether you can return will be per the T&Cs of the catalogue from where you purchased it.
Correct on the office - you won't be able to return that. You may also have to pay PCW for advice on how to install it, given that it is not their fault that it won't work. But worth a try!0 -
Don't expect any help from Microsoft with the office, at £110 you have bought the home and student version so are going against the terms of use by using it commercially. They have got a lot stricter with this lately.
They no longer care about or domestic users having a knockoff license but have started to pursue businesses using domestic licenses.0 -

Agree with this, I bought a HP laptop last week and it was so slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww. Took me about 15 hours to finally get all the updates downloaded and installed and it is now running much faster.
One thing that was a problem, is that is came with Windows 8 and not 8.1. It wouldn't let me update to 8.1, until it had done over 100 updates. 8.1 makes several improvements over 8 and is worth updating too.
As for the Wifi, it could depend on the network capabilities, some cheaper laptops have compromises in this area, which means speeds can be an issue.0
