Seen the new AV-Test results?

http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-user/windows-7/janfeb-2014/

It seems Avast! is still not doing so well, that's a few tests where it's been not as good as other free options, if not plain badly. I think I'll be going with Panda free or Avira free now. Panda's been doing really well in recent tests, and Avira too is back near the top again.

skewed analysis/markings - a marking of 3 out of 6 suggests it's missing 50% of viruses,, it isn't, it's better than the industry average.

Detection of widespread and prevalent malware discovered in the last 4 weeks (the AV-TEST reference set)

    jan 98% feb 98%

    Industry average: 97
    Samples used: 17,794

Protection against 0-day malware attacks, inclusive of web and e-mail threats (Real-World Testing)

    jan 97%
    Feb 90%

    Industry average: 94
    Samples used: 151

the fact it dipped a little in one month against a very small sample set of zero day attacks doesn't mean it's useless, next week it could be 100, av companies are always playing catchup.

different test, different results, but consistently >98% detection rate

Bit like the TV adverts. 8 out of 10 people preferred our product.

They asked 5000 people and 4990 hated the product but they didnt like that figure so narrowed it down to 10. 8 liked it and 2 couldnt care less.

Bitdefender also offers a free cloudbased anti virus program which uses the same definitions database as its paid for Internet Security Suite cousins.

The AV tests should not be used in isolation in my view .
I prefer to take a long term view of them and only use products that consistently over a number of years are very high in the rankings .
