CTC and stopping single claim to make joint one

Hi all, I'm so stressed about this me and my partner have moved in together and we've joint our esa claim and that is now sorted so I phoned tax credits today to let them kknow thinking it would be a simple phone call and thats that! Oh no.. my money has been stopped and until I get the new joint claim sent in which I've heard could take up to 6-7 weeks?! I have two children, a private rented house which my rent is due next Tuesday and i use my ctc which goes on mondays to put towards the extra rent needed and when I said all this to tax credits basically couldn't care less if we don't have much to live pff or pay our rent it's their "procedures". No wonder so many people don't be honest of this is what happens and never warn you when ypu hear their adverts on radio about updating your circumstances! I would like to know how long roughly fprnpthers did this take and how did you manage/budget? I'm so worried because of my rent and ive never been great with managing my money to start with. ..

  • Hi Gemini,

When I moved from a single to joint tax credits claim, it took 8 weeks from start to finish. It was all backdated though. During that time I was forced to borrow from friends. Get a claim in for housing benefit asap as you will be entitled to this - you will get a temporary award until your tax credits are sorted out. I hope that it's quick for you - my claim was sent to compliance which is why it took so long...hopefully yours will be quicker xxx
  • Thanks for replying. I already have housing benefit but that got suspended due to my change of circumstances and still awaiting for the payments to go through for that. I hope it's alot quicker than 8 weeks!
