Backpacker travel insurance mid trip

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I have been away from the UK for around 5 months now, travelling in South America. We recently decided to extend our trip by several months, requiring us to extend our insurance.

For this trip we bought 'insure & go backpacker light 1', the cheapest we could find, as all we want is medical cover. This costed £68.

On contacting the company to renew, we have been told the only way to renew is to upgrade to bronze cover, which has identical policy details, but costs £192 each. We have been told this is the only way we can renew with insure & go.

We feel this is an exorbitant premium and do not wish to support such exploitative tactics from an insurance company. We would prefer to buy a new policy from another company.

Does anyone know of any backpacker insurance policies that can be bought once the trip has commenced? It is a general condition that travel insurance must commence on the day of travel when the traveller is still in one's home area. We are currently in Colombia.

Thanks for reading!
