    What is your budget?

    Which countries do you need?

What features do you want (e.g. Traffic)?

    Can you use your smartphone?

In the UK I've found that Google maps is sufficient in most cases after I bought a screen mounted holder.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

It's very subjective. For every person that likes Tomtom, there's another that prefers Garmin. I suspect if you've always had Tomtom that will feel most intuitive and comfortable. See if you can try the different ones out - they will all get you A to B.

There is lots of feedback that TomTom has lost the plot on recent models. I certainly had a lot of grief with their update software, and the Tom Tom software on wife's iPhone was a disaster - too slow to react which made lane advice on autobahns far too exciting. I'm less than impressed with Garmin based on experience with their non-car devices.

I've been really impressed with Waze on my Android smartphone (old Samsung S2). Very good routing and is free, and integrating with looking things up on Google is good. It found a quicker sensible route for me on my drive from Solihull to Seaton, Devon, knocking off 10 or 15 minutes.

No lane guidance or speed limit advice though.

I've used Garmin, TomTom, Nokia and Android over the years.

The free one that comes with Android is more than good enough, enough that I can't justify blowing money on a dedicated unit.

Plus with it integrating with the other google services, you can do things like when a calendar reminder pops up, you click on the location for the event and it takes you to the satnav without having to type in again, similarly you can type in a person's name and if you filled in their address in the contacts app then it will look up that address and start taking you there.

It is important to get a good phone holder if going down this route, however.

I prefer my phone as it will gives me traffic updates p, for instant coming back from north wales to north west manc, it warned me that that the bit of traffic I was coming up to when join the m60 was a serious incident and the road was closed so I could come off and gone the back roads. Without my phone I wouldn't have has clue until it appear on the radio.

My Garmin Nuvi does exactly that. Anywhere in Europe.

I dread to think what the roaming charges would be on a trip to Austria and back, using a mobile phone.
  • I've got a tom tom from years ago still works great - my only gripe is that you put it near a charger and it thinks you're connecting it to the net so it tries to log you on to try and sell you things at the expense of your time. This is an issue when the battery is dead as you have no choice but to charge

despite this I prefer it to my gf's garmin - the garmin gives too much notice, I find, tom tom tells you once you're nearly there so it's more laid back not so much information too soon

and as rest say -personal choice !
