Considering the disgusting customer service Clydesdale Bank offer in their branches i say good riddance!
What in-branch services do you need? I'm intrigued.

  • I've just recently tried to open an account with Clydesdale/Yorkshire.

I applied online to Clydesdale and after going through all the details got a reference on an e-mail. Then another mail saying "Go to branch". So I tried again using Yorkshire Bank online. Got another reference number so decided to phone them instead. Got through to a call centre. The young guy couldn't have been less interested in opening an account. First of all said something like "it will take 20 minutes" (sort of questing was it worth the hassle for either of us - LOL). When I said yeah lets do it he took all my details then reckoned that the system couldn't verify my address and I should "go to branch". This is despite opening accounts online very easily with Lloyds and Santander. I just got the impression that they had some sort of policy to refer you to branch.

Point taken. I was just sent the paperwork in the post, signed and returned it and the account was open within a week. I agree a fully-online account opening service would be good, but it's not like you have to do it very often.

Also, many banks allow deposits and withdrawals at Post Offices, so it isn't the end of the world if the nearest branch of "your" bank is miles away. http://www.postoffice.co.uk/banking-services

The Clydesdale Bank works much better than that document suggests - I've paid in cash at the Post Office with only my debit card and the money was immediately visible online and available to use.

Other half opened a current account 10 months ago at local Clydesdale branch and was told by advisor she would receive a MasterCard debit card in post. 3 weeks later nothing arrived and after calling them was told to told to visit local branch. After cashier re-ordered a debit card 2 weeks later received a Maestro debit card. Visited local branch again (again phone support were unable to help) and original advisor who opened account apologised, took the maestro card back and said a new MasterCard debit card would be sent. 2 weeks later another maestro card was sent in post!! After visiting branch again, was told by a different advisor that wife didn't qualify for a MasterCard, and original advisor had mysteriously disappeared. Needless to say she closed her account there and then. This is why the likes of First Direct get raving reviews...not because they offer 69p interest each month but they do the simple things correctly.

Seems to be a regular occurrence with Clydesdale as I understand that they need to manually order a card when opening an account.

Again, it's a question of hassle versus money.

Have a proper website that allows an account to be opened online then please! I am not taking time off work to visit a branch!

Then find a bank that does. Not the banks problem if you don't wish to take time off.

So my local branch is shutting ............ and they have so mucked up their online banking that I have been three weeks unable to log on .... and counting!!!

New one time password arrived this morning - logged on - thrown out - no longer recognise these passwords.

Solution from call centre ............ send out ANOTHER password!!!! Yet another week with no access to my accounts!!!

Time to move everything I think - it will be quicker for sure!!!

I had my new 5% account with TSB setup in 1 week - start to finish and seems to be fine so far.

BOS is pretty much the same but with 3% and more Scottish branding.

Scotland seems to be getting a good deal in banking - 3 of our 'Big 4' banks (RBS, BOS, Clydesdale & TSB) are offering between 3-5% interest.
