Uniform tax rebate

Quick question R.E. Uniform tax rebate...
I've just been issued a new uniform (3 dresses,a blazer & necklace). I checked the labels straight away and they say 'dry clean only'. I asked my manager if the company would be paying for our dry cleaning and he said no. We're still waiting for the blazers to arrive, but I have washed and ironed the dresses myself at home.
I understand I can apply for a tax rebate, but I'm not sure how it works? Do they pay you a lump sum to cover your expenses over the last year for example? I certainly can't afford to pay for dry cleaning each week!
The dresses have washed up well so far, but I have bad experiences with washing my previous uniform jacket! It costs around £5 a time to get a jacket dry cleaned and I can't afford that!
Why would they provide a uniform that is dry clean only and not be willing to pay for it?
Thanks in advance :j

That's great. Thanks for your help! :-)
But, in the mean time what do I do? I'm not paying for dry cleaning!0 -
if you have the uniform supplied then you tell HMRC and they will add the £60 to your tax code - saving you £12 per year if a 20% taxpayer!...
it is not going to cover your expense (I think the argument would be that if you were not supplied a uniform you would need to buy and wash your own clothes with no assistance)0 -
Thanks again!0

Then don't dry clean the uniform. You have choices, if you don't like the terms your employer is setting out then you can either put up with it or look elsewhere. Also I wash pretty much everything that states dry clean only, as yet no problems. It's someone else's fault.0
