Have been buying the 'new-price' milk at around a pound from Mr M for a few weeks now, but notice we're alwys throwing away the last fifth of the plastic bottle - anyone else notice if this the freshest milk? Also, wondering where it comes from - ie , mixture ? (like they do with farm co-op wine in France!!)

I absolutely cannot stand the normal milk anymore, it doesn't last and tastes watery. Get filtered (cravendale or equivalent), tesco is three for £4 and it lasts, and lasts and lasts.

In my local store the ASDA brand filtered milk is usually labelled with an only an extra day or two more than the "normal" milk. On occasions I have seen the filtered milk with earlier use-by dates than the "normal" milk.
I gave up on Cravendale when some which was a week before its use-by date and had been correctly stored by me tasted decidedly off when I opened it. Definitely not worth the extra cost.0 -
The cheap milk I have bought from various supermarkets seems to have gone off quicker too. I have bought Cravendale and it lasted very well. If I see it on offer I will buy it.0

are you using it with in its UB date?0 -
You're possibly not getting it from the supermarket fridge to your fridge quick enough. We buy 5 x 4pints whole milk from Aldi every week and have never had it go off even after 7 days in our fridge.0

Staff that work in fresh should remember the 30 min rule when they are putting stuff in the chillers. So if they are queuebusters and either their name or queuebusters are called over the tannoy, they need to put the cage they are working from back in the chiller in the back. Maybe the store should consider not to use fresh food staff on the checkouts.
Also work out the number of days it takes to consume a 4 pint bottle milk. If it takes you a week, then get a milk with at least a week's shelf life left.I live alone and I use 4 pints per week and get the one with the longest date. Tip, pick the milk from the bottom of the crate as the staff put the milk with the shortest date at the top.
I don't have this issue with Sainsburys' milk. All of their milk is 100% British
Also you don't state which milk you buy as the lower the fat content milk has, the longer it lasts. Fat is the thing that makes it go off. I can get an extra day or two from skimmed if needed.

The shelf life testing of the milk should take this into account.
They are likely to have a period during testing where they store the product at 20C for a short period to replicate taking the item home on a warm summer day.
Plus a big 4pint should warm up less than say 1 pint bottle during this period.
How ever saying that, we do not know how the OP is storing the milk etc.
All we know its not's preforming as well as the old milk they used.0 -
You might want to check the temperature in your fridge, I've left 4 pint bottles opened in the fridge and gone on holiday for a week and come back to useable milk.0

Milk usually lasts one week so don't really need to buy cravendale..0
