Car Insurance, Do I Declare Points ?

Options
Quick question,

My car insurance is due for renewal on the 26th March and I received a notice of intended prosecution for exceeding the 30mph limit recorded on the 19th march which is as far as I recall correct as I remember the dreaded flash, However upon opening the notice from the police the location stated was completely different to where I was so I have contacted them today and been advised to send them a letter stating I was not in the mentioned area (which I wasn't) and they would investigate. Now i'm assuming it is an error on their part and I will just receive a new notice with the correct location on soon. So my question is do I declare this offence while searching for my new insurance or state I have no previous motoring convictions (which I dont) and then update with my insurance company if/when I am sent the correct notice with correct location. please help ?

I think the question asked is do you have any previous convictions or prosecutions pending? So you would have to answer yes and provide details.

I'm sure they ask the question about impending as well, in the long run it may work out cheaper to tell them before they accept your proposal, than later they cancel your policy or other sanction they could levy.

I would argue that you only received a notice of intended prosecution, I.e you have not been prosecuted yet, so there is no need to declare, and if you do get fined and the points put on, only then would you have to declare.

Simplest thing to do is to find the cheapest quote without the SP30 declared and give them a ring and explain the situation.

Please note that I have no connection to the insurance industry and the above is just my opinion and should not in any way be treated as fact.

EDIT: Also, if the question mentions pending prosecutions, you will have to declare.

I'm pretty sure they have to get the NIP to you within 14 days and whilst they can correct errors and re issue it, the corrected NIP must also be with you within 14 days of the offence.

I'd not be having any further contact with them other than to return the form just before the deadline identifying yourself as the driver and saying that whilst you were the driver at the time concerned you weren't in the place alleged.

Doing it close to the dead line will stop them correcting and reissueing (hopefully your call today won't prompt it)

Might be worth heading over to https://www.pepipoo.com and see what they have to say.
