Virtual Hard Drive Problem

This one is strange, so hope someone can help.
Computer crashed last week, but managed to recover it. Now on boot up, I have 2 options, both system recovered options, The first just lets me get to the W7 welcome screen and then goes to a black screen and no further.
2nd loads as normal, but without many of the old programs. Had to re-install drivers etc to get back to normal.
I have found the vhd file and tried to mount it, via computer management, but every time it is showing as empty, so cannot get at the data on it.
System is W7 Home Premium.
