    If language is an issue, do it in writing or email.

    Since the OP didn't authorise the transaction, it is a valid chargeback - end of story.

    There are two resolution paths to this:

    1) Keep going with the bank and the hotel, expect a lot of back and forth. The hotel aren't 'simply' going to give the money up - they are going to want your friend to have paid it off first (which, of course, he's already rung up the hotel to do right?) ... elapsed time measured in weeks and good deal of effort with phone calls and letters. Friends have to be involved anyway to fix the problem.

    2) Email your mates with the breakdown and explain the mistake, ask them to claim the bits they drank and send you the money. Elapsed time - about a week and effort = 1 email and a check of the bank account.

    While I appreciate the desire to get something out of the hotel and/or bank - the path to resolution is probably more effort than the £56 is worth.
