Chromebook question

Right so I've got a chromebook but have no idea what I am doing.
Am I correct in thinking all files etc are stored online?
When I go to my sisters/parents etc and use my laptop it set so my computer doesn't show I'm connected to the wifi and none of my files show on the other devices using the same network - set it like this as kept popping up on the smart tv. Any idea how I do this from a chromebook? I'd like it so no one can see I'm connected and can not see my folders etc.
For such a small things it's bloody complicated to use lol

Sorry, I don't think I would be able to word it any better than they do.
I can only suggest that you take it slowly one step at a time, get that sorted, then move on to the next.
