Roof Lantern

Does anyone have experience of having a roof lantern fitted to their property?

We are considering this for a conservatory extension, 3m x 3m, but my mind boggles with options and difference in prices quoted by various companies.

Ours will be a unit purchase to be fitted by our builder/roofer.

Any advice, what to look out for etc would be appreciated.
Thanks

Tell me about it. We are going to put one in our flat roof extension - 2x3m and I'm really struggling to know where to get it from!

Our builder quoted for one from a local firm £2500 supply and fit, but I'm looking at a triple glazed one from reflexglass for around £3500 as I think you get what you pay for and with such a big area of glass I don't want too much heat loss.

u values are key for heat loss. Get the whole unit not just the glass.

Ours is to go into a conservatory roof, so to be honest Im not really worried too much about U values, I am sure it will be better than normal polycarbonate roof ( and more expensive) but would like a lantern more for cosmetic reasons.

Im struggling to find a reputable seller, plenty on ebay but hardly any of them have relevant feedback, prices increase dramatically for anything other than a 1m x1m size, and to change the colour from white somehow doubles the price.

I looked at a softwood one to match the conservstory timber, this somehow costs almost 3x !!

Did your quote of £2500 include for flat roof supply and fit too?
  • Hi,

We got ours from CCS Midlands ltd. (ccsmidlands@hotmail.com). Dealt with Dave, the owner i think, and Dan, Both were very helpful.

We wanted 2 lanterns 1200 x 2000 for our 9m x 5m extension. We negotiated the price down from £1900 for the pair including delivery to the south coast . Almost 2 years ago, now i think about it, so may well have increased in price!

They were made and delivered part assembled in around 14 days. I installed them with our builder, fairly easily following instructions provided.

We are very happy with them and really add the wow factor to the room.

I've seen those on ebay, blackshirt, but it seems suspiciously cheap! Why are they half the cost of anywhere else? Do you know the u values and how have you found them during the winter?
  • Sorry don't remember the u values but seem to remember the building inspector took note and was happy.

Honestly the inspector made us so much insulation into the extension it keeps the heat really well. We had to put 150mm celotex into the ceiling and around the kerb of the lanterns.

We had underfloor heating on for 1 hour in the morning, room still warm at lunchtime and on for a couple of hours in the evening.

We are really happy with them, we went for the self cleaning blue tint glass. I was skeptical but it does work!!
