Selling my Wedding and Engagement rings

Hi All,

My husband and I are getting divorced, it's been a very bad time, I had to leave uni (I had only been back there for a few months, retraining as a nurse), and return to my previous employer, albeit on with a 10k paycut and my son has had to go in to (paid) nursery. My husband, it transpires was a serial cheat, so my rings hold very little in the way of sentemental value and I want to sell them to raise some cash.

They are both platinum with diamonds - where do you think is the vest place to get them sold?

Many thanks

x

I personally would go and get them indepandantly valued at a jeweller before selling. Have seen a few do free valuations for insurance purposes. So you get a better idea of what they are worth before approaching selling them. But avoid cash converters etc as you will get nowhere near the worth of them. If you get a cert to prove its a platinum ring set, then sometimes ebay on free listings weekends with a reserve is a good place to start.

You're likely to get a better price from a good local jewellers. Get your rings valued at a couple before you decide which one to offer them to.

Bear in mind that there is likely to be a huge difference between the amount that a jeweller will give as an insurance valuation and what they are actually willing to pay to buy them off you.

Recently sold my 3 x diamond and platinum engagement ring and platinum wedding ring.

The wedding ring went for around £50 at a local jewellers.

As Gloomendoom says - the valuation is a completely different figure. Mine was 'valued' at in excess of two grand. I got quotes from several shops at Hatton Garden (it was bought from there) and a couple of local jewellers. All ridiculously low (from 'I don't want it' to around £350). Eventually sold on ebay for £623.

One jeweller advised ebay, another said people will mess you around. I have since sold a Cartier necklace and had one no-feedback bidder mess me around (bid/won with no intention of replying to emails or paying), but it sold okay eventually to someone else.

My Mum wanted to sell some rings she inherited from her Mum and various aunties - she had valuations from several local 'old fashioned' jewellers and sadly the advice she had from all of them is - you get a little more than scrap value but that's it. If the rings are a small size, they're even less desirable. In the end, one of the jewellers suggested taking some of the bigger stones and making them into earrings - he used the scrap gold and platinum from the rings to offset some of the cost. She paid about £100. At least she has a piece of jewellery that she can wear. I suggested that she could try selling the others on eBay, we knew the sizes of the rings, but in the end she donated them to a charity.
An auction house that has a specialised jewellery sale might be a very good place to start. However, the selling costs might be less on eBay.

Oh thats sucha good idea, melt them down and make something else! Lovely pair of earrings as a reward for getting out of a bad situation. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do op xx

You are fortunate in living within an hour of the country's most famous area for jewellery auctions and traders, Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter and its Auction House. You ought to pay a visit and see the myriad dealers in the city who will provide you with a range of valuations for you to choose from.
