No Claims Bonus - How do I find out??

I have not had any car insureance for a good few years yet as I sold my car to help ease my debts. I am now in a position again where I need a car again. I am trying to get some insureance quotes but do not know how many years no claims bonus I have? Is there a way that I can find out as I really want to keep the cost of my insureance down.
Please help, I need to save money if possible.

If it has been more than 2 years since you have had car insurance you probably will find that you will have no NCB in he eyes of the insurance industry.0 -
I suspect you have none because it will have "run out".
However the fact that you are older, with no accidents or convictions for a good few years will stand you in good stead.
Do you have a partner?
There are some firms that allow you to "duplicate" a partners NCB.
Try "more than" and "direct line".
Also "direct line" do discounts for the second car insured with them in the household, so if you partner (or anyone else in the house) has insurance then that's another route to try.
No connection to these companioes, just ones that spring to mind. There may well be other that do similar or better deals.
Definitely look at Martins article and don't forget quidco.0 -
I was wondering if you could back trace no claims bonus. I have been driving on my own insurance, without a claim, for 16 years and was given 2 years ncb by my first insurer for being on my mum's policy. Yet I only have 6 years on my renewal notice. This is because my last insurer just put "more than 4 years" on the renewal. I'm not sure whether it matter, pracically, if I have 6 or 18 years ncb but if it does can I prove it? Stupidly, I threw out everything to do with my old car last year when I got a new one and can't remember who insured me when.0

In general once you get to 4,5 or 6 any extra don't make a difference.
Some insurers like esure will go up to 10 but the discount goes from 70% to 75% so it's pretty small.
I think generally it's up to you to keep the renewal notices.
Usually there isn't much motivation on a company to help you once you've left them so trying to get the reneway notice retrospectively is difficult.0 -
I was wondering about this too, as I also have not had a car for a year and have just bought one. I know I had either 2 or 3 years NCB before I sold my car so I put 2 on my insurance to be safe.
These must be a way of finding this information out surely.
What if I had an accident and had to claim and the insurers asked for proof of NCB for the last 2 years, which I don't have?
I throw my old insurance documents away once expired, and I cant even remember which insurance company I was with when I sold my car so what happens if the above scenario happens?0 -

How long have you had this policy? I ask because usually insurers take your word for it how many yrs NCB you have at inception of policy then a couple of weeks down the line you get a letter asking you to send them proof of your NCB. Usually a renewal letter from your previous insurer is all the proof they need.
I would assume if they haven't ask for the proof yet they will soon.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
No they didn't ask for proof of NCB and I have had the insurance since August, so it expires soon.
Ive contactd the insurers I believe I have used before to ask if they can supply proof of my previous insurance se we will see what comes of that.0 -

Hi i havent drove for a number of years due to me working abroad and i have been told by various people and have also noticed this thread, that after 2 years of not having insurance that i am unable to use my NCD even though i have more than 10yrs no claims.
this seems very unjust and i was wondering which company you are with who do not require proof from your previous insurers regarding NCB?
Thank you for your help
